Litany

You are the bread and the knife,
the crystal goblet and the wine.
You are the dew on the morning grass
and the burning wheel of the sun.
You are the white apron of the baker,
and the marsh birds suddenly in flight.

However, you are not the wind in the orchard,
the plums on the counter,
or the house of cards.
And you are certainly not the pine-scented air.
There is just no way that you are the pine-scented air.

It is possible that you are the fish under the bridge,
maybe even the pigeon on the general's head,
but you are not even close
to being the field of cornflowers at dusk.

And a quick look in the mirror will show
that you are neither the boots in the corner
nor the boat asleep in its boathouse.

It might interest you to know,
speaking of the plentiful imagery of the world,
that I am the sound of rain on the roof.

I also happen to be the shooting star,
the evening paper blowing down an alley
and the basket of chestnuts on the kitchen table.

I am also the moon in the trees
and the blind woman's tea cup.
But don't worry, I'm not the bread and the knife.
You are still the bread and the knife.
You will always be the bread and the knife,
not to mention the crystal goblet and - somehow - the wine.

Time of the Season

It's that time of year when you can no longer avoid seeing 'Back to School Sale' flyers. And even if you are not going back to school, it is still very depressing.  I have assembled a little playlist that I hope captures the fleeting warmth and beauty of the month of August, do enjoy...

Lifting the Hood

Hooded Fang is a band from Toronto. I've been listening to their song, Land of Giants, a lot recently, its a good bicycle riding or dancing song. Anyways, I'm looking forward to future albums and such from this group. Enjoy this video of Hooded Fang from Southern Souls, a site that showcases bands playing in casual environments such as streets, grocery stores, bedrooms etc. Very similar La Blogotheque's Take Away Shows, except it focuses on musicians from the Southern Ontario area... click here to check out Southern Souls.

What to Say

Here's the new video for Born Ruffian's What To Say off their upcoming album,
Say it, and I must say that I am very excited for June 1st (the release date). What I have heard, sounds good, and thats all I  really have to say... and Aviators, too bad it wasn't actually Mitch, just a look-alike.

Billykirk Brothers

Billykirk from The Scout on Vimeo.

Here is an interesting portrait of the very dapper looking Billykirk Brothers who make high end leather goods. Their philosophy of buying good quality, high end products once, instead of continuously buying heaps of crap really resonates with me. It seems as through things were just made better in the good ol'days. Below is one of their products that is currently on my wish list.

Swimmin' the Great Lakes

I am a wee bit in love with Tony Dekker from The Great Lake Swimmers. I think it’s because most of his work is inspired by the wonders of Canada’s natural environment. There is something really humbling in that. “Your Rocky Spine” lyrics were circulating in my head as I drove across a large portion of Ontario, passing through quaint small towns and scenic farmland. Their CD Lost Channels, plus a Canadian road trip=perfection.

Angus & Julia

The Australian siblings, Angus and Julia Stone, are here with their second album, Down the Way. Sibling acts are truly wonderful and in this case beautiful. Though I appreciate the alternating vocals and their distinct styles, I must admit that I prefer Angus' voice. So far, my favourite song from the album is Black Crow...

Storytime

I love this man. His mustache, accent, stories. Trisarahtops, I think when you do illustrations for books, you should have a workplace like his. I would come visit everyday.

Whimsy Birds

I love these prints by Diana Sudyka. They are very whimsy and spring like and remind me of the illustrations from some of my favourite childhood books. An interesting fact about the wonderful Diana Sudyka, is that she has worked for Andrew Bird - what a wonderful pairing.

It's Time to Say It

So, the Born Ruffians new album, Say It, is expected to be released June 1st. I'm really liking the album cover, it reminds me of the crystal I found it the park a few days ago...  Anyway, the song, Sole Brother, is track number three on the album, and if you'd like you can download a version of it on Daytrotter Sessions... click here and may I suggest downloading Skeleton Me as well, it's quite wonderful.

The Lords of Dogtown

Dr Dog's new album Shame, Shame is expected to be released April 6th. This album is said to have a more modern and edgy sound, compared to previous works. Dr Dog is commonly compared to the likes of The Beatles, or The Band, but I think they do their own thing. Their new single, Shadow People, still sounds a lot like their old stuff, and I think that there's nothing wrong with that.

Seabear is Swimming Again

Seabear, the lovable folk band from Reykjavik, Iceland, is back with their new album, We Built a Fire. I believe, that this album was supposed to be released in March 2010, but as it is out at the moment, enjoy it now.  On another note, I'd just like to mention that band member, Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir, makes all the album artwork and videos by hand. I admire crafty people.
Here's the single version of Lion Face Boy.

Copenhagen is the Place

I recently discovered that there's a blog entirely dedicated to posting pictures of fashionable people riding beautiful bicycles... It's called Copenhagen Cycle Chic, and it's pretty inspiring... click here. This is quite the video; Nick Diamonds and Michael Cera make an explosive and magical duo. Mixed CDs

I've been making mixed CDs for a while, it's a good way to share music. I was inspired by the mixed tapes exchanged in the novel, Perks of Being a Wallflower. Not only do I enjoy picking out the songs, but making the album artwork as well. Mixed CDs make nice gifts, but it's even better to get a one in return. This is my latest, The Dream Catcher Mix...
